Into the big city

Today we ventured into the big city of London for the afternoon and evening.

We first headed to Covent Garden so we could visit Stanford's map shop before they move premises next month. We read an article about this place in the FT Weekend some months ago. It has been here 117 years and was bombed during WW2 but survived because the top floor was so tightly packed with maps the fire didn't destroy the whole building. It is the place where Sir Ernest Shackleton and Robert Scott went to plan their expeditions. It felt appropriate that we went to this place with all of Rhodri's work, so we took the #38 bus from Victoria and then walked through the streets until we found it.

After Stanfords, we did some other shopping and then stopped for warm drinks and cakes in a little cafe.
Then we walked over to Carnaby Street to see the lights and visit the Queen (the band, not the person) exhibit especially for Tryfan.
Then we went to Kulu Kulu Sushi for some conveyor belt sushi. We found that the best place to sit is 'upstream' and close to the kitchen. We had a great meal there and it was so fun to get here exactly at 5 pm just as they were starting up the conveyor belt! By the time we left there was a queue out the door.
After dinner we walked for a bit and then hopped on bus #38 again to get back to Victoria so we could arrive in good time for the 7:30 pm performance of Wicked.
None of us had seen it, but since it is the prequel to the Wizard of Oz, it seemed appropriate that we should see it. Plus the Apollo Victoria is literally next to Victoria Station, so it meant a very easy commute home after the show finished. The show itself was amazing and we were so impressed!
So it was a long day in the end, but since Sioned had taken Winnie to go visit friends a few hours away and we had nothing else planned, it seemed like the right thing to do. I'm so glad we did. We never go into London and today/tonight was so clear and beautiful with all the festive lights and everything. It was really a great outing.

Auntie Sions!

Back in town from her year in Washington DC
She is so excited to reunite with her precious Winnie dog. I wasn't there for the reunion, but I bet Winnie was pretty excited to see Sioned too.

Sunday morning and a Spud Club birthday

I baked some pastries for the girls in the morning, then took Winnie on a walk. It was a gorgeous morning with the mist rising from the earth and exuding out of the pine trees.

After the Danehill posse cleared out around midday, the Spud Club came over to celebrate Rhiannon's birthday from 2 to 6 pm. We sent them straight out to the tipi which Rhodri and I had set up on Friday afternoon and then strung up the lights to make it cozy inside for today.

There was a LOT of laughter coming from the tipi and it was so nice to hear. When they finally came inside, Tryfan had laid the table with Christmas crackers to make it special for them.
Eventually this party finished and it was Sunday night, time to get ready for the last few days of school before the Christmas holidays.

Brighton birthday shopping

This morning Emma and I took the 'Danehill posse' to Brighton to go shopping for the day.
Too bad it was ridiculously bad weather, with fierce wind and rain lashing us as we walked from the station into town. But it was fine really. The important thing is that the girls enjoyed being together.

In reality, it was an absolute nightmare getting them all onto the train and get their sleepover stuff and birthday presents into the car for later. I don't know what I would have done on my own! Thank goodness that Emma was there to help.

We took the 15:23 train to HHE and then waited for Rhodri to meet us and help transport us back to the house. When it was all over and everyone was safely back to our house, Emma and I snuck off to have a cheeky glass of mulled wine and a couple bowls of chips at the Red Lion. NICE.

Tree Lighting Party in the Gate

This is my favorite evening of the whole year. Seriously.
I just absolutely love this event. These are the ingredients, although each year is different and unpredictable...: (1) at least one song that the audience is invited to sing but the words are not available to read; (2) an act that just goes on way longer than it should to the point of being unbearably dull; (3) heart-touching beauty in the form of a surprising act or moment. Tears always come to my eyes at some point in the evening, either from feeling the Christmas spirit in a piercing moment of purity or from laughing so hard that I'm about to burst.

The event started at 6:30 pm in the village hall with the bar open from the little kitchen and all donations from the whole evening going towards the peanut ward at the East Grinstead hospital. The Fishlock family runs the night and they serve their homemade cider which is lovely but dangerous! Other drinks available too, of course, and so everyone bought some beverages and then found a place to sit or stand so the evening could start. The MC ('Mr Fish') welcomed everyone and we all sang a Christmas Carol to kick things off. Then there was the traditional moment of uncertainty as we prepared to turn the Christmas tree lights on: do we stay inside and just peer out the windows to see the lights come on, or do we all go outside and gather round the tree to have the lights come on?
This year it was the latter (as it normally is) and so with everyone moaning about how they only just sat down and took their coats off to get comfortably settled into the evening, they huffingly put their coats back on and shuffle as a crowd outside to the dark muddy grass round the tree. The lights got switched on, and everyone sang 'O Christmas Tree'. The kids (having now been turned loose outside with their friends) immediately started running around in the dark muddy grass and playing tag, hide-n-seek, and all those types of games before they got ushered back under control. So after this one song (which, by the way, had the lyrics printed out in the programs although it was too dark to actually read the writing) everyone filed back to their seats so the entertainment could continue. The small kids always sit on the floor in front, and for some reason the crowd this year was particular vocal and confident in their comments and even heckling! Poor Mr Fish really struggled to manage this surly crowd.  Next up was the Danehill Handbell Ringers with their decades-old piece of cardboard that provides the music for them to read from.
Then next came Danehill School performing some pieces which they hadn't practiced before (since Mr Waters has left the school to become a proper teacher, they have really suffered on the fun, musical energy side). Fair play to Susie for rallying everyone to even get up there in the first place tonight. The only bummer was that they sang 'Jingle Bells' which we had only just finished singing with the Handbell Ringers, and actually the night would also feature a 3rd repetition of the song as well later in the program! Anyway, the evening is not the same without a school performance so it had to be done.
There were a few other acts in the first half of the night, including an impromptu performance of 'The northern lights of Aberdeen' sung by some visiting relatives of a family in the village who had traveled down from Scotland for the holidays; a solo a-capella performance of some song I've never heard of (which was quite brave); and then a couple of songs by Mr Fish himself. Finally it was intermission and a chance to refill the glasses. Unfortunately a lot of the audience took advantage of the break to make their escape entirely, which was noticeable once the intermission was over and the hall was suddenly quite empty! Anyway, during the intermission one of the kids went up to Mr Fish and volunteered to perform an act with 5 other boys but didn't say what they were going to perform. So Mr Fish invited these 6 mystery boys to the front and Tryfan was among them! They all stood in a line at the front looking thick and thieves and I'm sure I wasn't alone in expecting them to bust out a raunchy toilet-humor song... but instead we got this:
And although the evening continued for awhile after this, it was this performance which was my favorite of the program. I'm just glad that Emma encouraged me to film it before I knew what I was filming! Anyway, it was a great evening and then I walked down to the Coach with Anne Marie for a 'farewell to Macha' event.

A very pheasant experience

Steve our neighbor gave us a brace of pheasants the other day, so this evening we got into them (literally). Rhodri and I each took one and got the meat out of it, then somehow Rhiannon ended up dissecting the heart of one of them as part of an ad-hoc science lesson from Rhodri. Tryfan, in the meantime, was happy to be making gingerbread cookies. Good times in the Lewis house on a Tuesday evening!

And now we have a teenager

Today Rhiannon turned 13 and we tried to make it as special of a send off into teenage-hood as we could. She got to open some presents this morning and have toast in our bed, then after school Sophie came over and they went to yoga together, then came home to have risotto for dinner.

Our dear girl at this tender age is extremely thoughtful and deliberate about what she does and how she spends her time. She has amazing observational skills and is able to articulate her feelings and perceptions into clear words which is inspiring to both Rhodri and me. She loves music and is excited to finally be able to have an Instagram account. She is very creative and resourceful, and she has a fabulous laugh which is often heard these days, especially when she is with her "Spud Club" friends from Uckfield. She works hard at school and her favorite sport is netball. She can be properly moody and sulky, but as my Dad once said about someone else at the time, that is her job at this age! Anyway, she is a lovely person with a very kind, compassionate demeanor and we are so grateful to have her in our lives. Happy Birthday, Rhiannon.

A Sunday Walk

Just a gorgeous day out in the Ashdown Forest with my girl on her last day of being 12 years old.

Christmas tree goes up

We got our Christmas Tree today from the Carters down the road. They are the ones we normally go to, and this year was just as easy as it has been in the past. It is a little bit early to be getting the tree going, but with Rhiannon's birthday in a couple of days it just seemed the right thing to do.

We had a few squabbles while decorating it, but it turned out fine. Tryfan had the idea of winding the flashy lights around the trunk of the tree and then keeping the solid lights for the outer parts of the branches. This seemed to work out pretty well actually.

Here is a little video of the scene as we all got into the holiday spirit. Our favorite kick off music is the CD called "It's snowing all over the world" which I got from World Market about 15 years ago. One of the songs from it is featured in this little video...

Tim (Rufus)

I found out that my long lost friend from high school was visiting London just now, so I made contact and we found a way to get together! I picked him up last night from Haywards Heath station and he stayed the night with us, then we got to hang out a little bit in the morning before he had to leave again.

His real name is Tim but I used to call him Rufus and he called me Flossy. We were partners in crime in our little covert gang called 'Florence's morning joggers' at Prin...  Now Tim/Rufus lives in Alaska and runs an Alien Species Removal business (as in species of plants, not any other kind!).

The start of the Christmas season

Welcome to December! Now we get to officially eat mince pies and brandy cream. Woohoo!
Today was the school Christmas Fair and this year they held it from 3-6 pm on the school grounds. It was very atmospheric and different!
Then Sophie came over to have a sleepover at our house

Casper was back in town for a couple of days and so Oscar and Tryfan got to hang out together just like old times.

Weeee're off to see the Wizard

... the wonderful wizard of Oz!
Rhiannon was a really cute Munchkin in her school's production of the Wizard of Oz.

It was a really great performance and we all enjoyed the evening.  Tonight is Grandma's last night with us and she will be flying back home tomorrow. We are so glad that she was able to change her flight to be able to see Rhiannon's performance.

Lewes depot

This afternoon we went into Lewes. First we went to one of the old bookstores where Grandma Debi was buying one of the old copies of Poldark, and then we walked down to the Lewes Depot to have food and then watch Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindalwald.  The shop where Grandma got the book was a tiny tiny olde world shop on the high street. It was so tiny that the lady running it didn't even have a desk for a cash register! She had to stand perched in the back with the cash register on a stack of books.

Birthday dinner

I went out to dinner with 3 of my good friends tonight for my birthday - Anne Marie, Liz and Emma.
We went to the Hurstwood pub and had a really good night. The table next to us even had to 'shush' us for laughing too loudly at one point!

Ladies brunch

This morning Rhodri and Tryfan went off to football first thing, so Rachel, Rhiannon, Mom/ Grandma and I had a leisurely morning.

Pumpkin pie with canned whipped cream is fabulous for brunch!

Thanksgiving in the Gate

We invited about 10 families to join us in a Thanksgiving potluck at the village hall.

My cousin Rachel came down from London as well, and it was wonderful to spend time with her. She and Rhiannon did the main decorations around the village hall and it looked beautiful. Mom/ Grandma put a lot of effort and care into assembling little cups of imported candy treats (candy corn, autumn colored M&Ms and blister peanuts), and they were set at every place sitting. We also hung a big banner of a Thanksgiving turkey in the pride of place above the buffet table. So it was all very festive!
It was a lovely event, though not without some 'lessons learned' for next time! Note to self: designate a buffet table supervisor for when the hoards of kids come through the line, especially if the kids go first. Anyway, the event ran from 6-9 pm and it all went fairly well. Most of the kids just ate (while some unfortunately threw their little candy goodies at each other) and then ran outside unsupervised.  One of the perks of having events at the village hall is that the kids just kind of go feral outside playing in the woods and on the football pitch even in the dark. The theory is that the kids all look after each other, and if an adult is needed then someone will run and fetch one!

Living room scene in the evening

It has been nice to have Grandma here. While Rhiannon gets help from Rhodri with her homework, Tryfan gets to play Dragonvale with Grandma and I get to cook dinner. Although today is Thanksgiving, we are going to delay our celebration of it until tomorrow.
Good times!

Outing to the big city

Today I went along with Tryfan's class to the British Museum in downtown London.
We all took the train into Victoria and then transferred to the Underground, changed lines once and then emerged to walk across a park to the Museum.
There were 26 kids and 6 adults including me. I had Tryfan, Oscar, Aaron and Mimar in my little group. We had a good time together keeping close and transiting across London.
It was a stunning autumn day, and also pretty cold - just single digits in temperature - and so the kids got to run wild for about 10 minutes before we continued to the museum.
We went into the museum and saw the Elgin marbles and the Rosetta stone, then we went up to the Saxon and Celtic room to spend a couple of hours studying 'Sutton Hoo'.

Then we made the same journey in reverse and got back home around 6pm.

A magical day

Mom arrived into Gatwick on Friday afternoon and I took her home to reunite with the rest of the family after school. After a failed attempt to get dinner from the Hop Yard, we picked up fish & chips from Den's and then came home to watch The Sound of Music (Sing along version) to try and keep Mom awake until 9pm. That worked pretty well. Yesterday (Saturday) was a pretty busy day doing various things, then today we had Lou come over at 9:45 am so we could all go to the florist wholesaler's shop and buy crafty stuff. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and we spent about an hour at the florist place, then decided to go somewhere for a spot of lunch.
We discovered The Wiremill lakeside pub - what a find! Good thing we were there before the crowds arrived so we could nab the heated gazebo.  I didn't realize there was actually a lake over in this part of the area, and while we were there a waterskier was doing his stuff right there in front of us. Live entertainment!
We had an absolutely lovely time together with so much laughter. What a day!
Then for dinner we drove to the Xenia Lounge in Crawley for my birthday dinner.

This is a Brazilian meat house type place that I had been to for lunch one time and wanted to use my birthday tokens to bring the family. It was pretty good, and they even brought me a piece of cheesecake and sang to me.

November plans

Its going to be a busy couple of weeks! My Mom will arrive tomorrow, then its my birthday on Monday, then Thanksgiving, then the Wizard of Oz performance that Rhiannon will be in during the last week of November.
Winnie and Una
In the meantime, we will continue to fit in opportunities to go on some good dog walks in the forest, complete various pieces of homework and work-work, and Rhodri will continue to 'kit people out' for their winter expeditions to cold and exotic places!

Winnie and Peter

Today we reunited with our long lost friends Winnie and Peter. Although they live fairly close by, our paths have not crossed very much these past few years and we just lost track of each other. Today, however, we fixed that. Winnie prepared a gorgeous dinner for us and we had a wonderful afternoon catching up with them.

Free movement

Today Rhodri and I took Winnie (the dog) on a long walk so we could get to a big field that she could run freely across. We aren't quite ready to let her run through the forest since sticks, bracken or brambles could possibly reopen her stitches, but a nice field of green grass should be just fine.
It was a stunning morning and what a treat to go on a walk with just Rhodri and I (and Winnie).
