To Donner and beyond

Today we went up to Donner Lake to play at the beach with my former boss Bill and his kids. We didn't go in the water too much but it was a fun afternoon. Here is Rhiannon chasing a goose with Lillie (13) with the boat in the background.
We all went back to Bill & Liz's house for dinner. The trampoline kept the girls busy while the rest of us socialized. Here is Rhiannon with (l to r): Corrinne (8), Lillie's friend, Alyssa (12) and Lillie (13).
Anyone who has had the privilege of attending one of Bill & Liz's "feeding events" will recognize the warm happy scene that always includes martinis and fabulous food prepared by Chef Liz.
There is always lots of laughter when Bill is around

Picnics, animals, and friends

Today was such a brilliant day! We met up with our good friends Beth and Brian, their baby girl Casey (16 months), and their dog Ruby for a picnic at San Rafael Park in Reno. We used to live right by this park but we had never gone into the part that charges admission until today since we didn't have kids when we lived here. First we dined on fresh fruit, cheese and delicious brews that B & B brought in the grassy shade. There were dinosaurs that could be climbed on in a section that was kept cool with misty water raining down and there was also a dinosaur slide that was a big hit with the daddies!
Rhiannon and Casey got to ride on real horses for the first time!
After the thrill of petting goats, feeding grass to a donkey, riding horses and going down dinosaur slides, it was time to say goodbye. First we had a little rock-out session with rattles and marimbas in their awesome camper van. Rhiannon didn't want to leave! Here they are all watching Ruby the dog jump up into the front seat.
We went over to our friends DeeDee and Wes' house this afternoon for a BBQ on their deck overlooking downtown Reno and the mountains of Lake Tahoe (to the right in this photo).
Rhiannon took an instant liking to DeeDee's son Cody, and she was all smiles as they played together during sunset.

Tour Stop #2: Reno

We flew to Reno on Sunday night and settled in with our longtime friend and former next-door neighbor Leann and her 3 girls. On Monday morning, after a leisurely start to the day, we went to the new Cabela's store that opened recently. It was a little like when the Griswolds made it to Wally World...Rhodri had been looking forward to this day for at least the past 6 months and there was great excitement as we crossed the parking lot and made our way to the front entrance!
Shopping madness as Leann calmly navigates the huge store with 4 girls in tow. Here are Alyssa (13), Rhiannon, Jadyn (5) and Hannah (3). There are grand taxidermic displays of animals that once were alive and also a huge aquarium (with live fish), as well as a shooting range to keep the kids busy.

Viva Las Mamas

Our gracious host Lisa organized a reunion of our Viva Las Mamas group on Saturday. She set up a bouncy castle thingy for the kids to jump in, and they did a heck of lot of jumping with only a few bumps and tears. It was really special to get together -- thank you, Lisa and Espi!
Here are (clockwise from top left): Espi, Isabella, Sofia, Miguel, Nicole, Heidi, Tate, Ruby, Lorin, Cade, Elke, Brett, Lisa, Rhodri, Rhiannon and me.
We also did hand print artwork as keepsakes for the occasion. Somehow the kids' clothes managed to stay relatively paint-free.

Feasting on familiar faces

We had such a wonderful time in San Diego! Actually we were staying in Encinitas, just north of San Diego. It totally felt like we were just feasting on the happy familiar faces of our long lost friends. We are so lucky to have such great friends :-)
Here are: Elke, Isabella, Rhiannon and Sofia happily eating watermelon over the weekend.Rhiannon and Isabella got along so well during our stay. It must be hard to have your 'friend' come in to play with all your stuff and then not leave for a few days! There were a couple of conflicts, but nothing major. It was so great to see the two girls work things out for themselves. Both Isa and Rhii have the same doll, so they did a lot of babydoll related activities -- pushing them around in strollers, in shopping carts, feeding them cheese, and nursing them as pictured here. I guess Isa's baby didn't have a good latch here...
When Elke came over to play, it was all systems go on the play structure in the backyard.
Rhiannon did a lot of pushing and pulling vehicles around -- the shopping cart, the rolling suitcase/ backpack, the stroller, the lawnmower -- and usually she was trying to push and pull at least 2 or 3 of these items at the same time! She loved parking them all inside of the play structure and then bringing snacks inside to munch on.

Western States Tour Stop 1- San Diego!

On Thursday morning we flew from the tiny Santa Barbara airport to San Diego. Rhiannon was really excited about our trip to go stay with her friend Isabella. We were the first ones on the plane and it was a lovely morning for flying over southern California. We landed in San Diego, picked up our rental car, and headed to Denny's restaurant for a good ol' American breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast and pancakes. Then we drove straight up to Encinitas to settle in with our friends Lisa and Espi and their daughter Isabella (who is 1 day younger than Rhiannon). They had prepared for our visit with this friendly chalk greeting:
It was a very exciting afternoon and Rhiannon didn't sleep at all, but it was good in a way because she was able to explore all of Isabella's toys and books while Isa was sleeping. After Isa woke up, we walked to the nearby park and pulled the girls in a wagon.
While we were at the park, we encountered a drinking fountain. That made me realize that I haven't seen any drinking fountains in Norway! Lisa and I had to explain to Rhiannon how to drink from it and Lisa suggested that Rhiannon pretend she is a dog. So Rhiannon did big licks of the water as flew in the air from the spout. It was pretty funny to watch!

Wading with Wade; beach and baseball

Today we hung out at home for the morning and Rhiannon harvested strawberries with her Uncle Eric. Then our family friend Wade came over. He is just a few days younger than Rhiannon so they had a lot to talk about in the frog wading pool. Then they figured out how to squirt water at each other so they had a good run around in the grass before nap time.
We went to Goleta Beach in the afternoon and met up with my friend Denise (one of my 3 best friends who is still in town) and her two kids Ava (4) and Liam (2.5). Liam is just a month younger than Rhiannon.
Tryfan ate a lot of sand after this picture was taken. He wanted to crawl around and put handfuls into his mouth. We tried to stop this but I think some sand made it past his lips.
Then we went to a UCSB Foresters baseball game for the first 2 innings. Such an American thing to do!
Here are Rhodri with Tryfan, Eric, Grandpa Carl and Rhiannon.
This was our last day in SB for the time being as we are off to San Diego tomorrow, but we will be back in early August after our "Western States Tour" is complete.

Enjoying Santa Barbara

Today we took a Lewis family trip down to Stearn's Wharf in downtown Santa Barbara for the morning. We went to the Sea Center and Rhiannon got to touch a baby shark! Then Tryfan fell asleep in the Ergo and Rhiannon fell asleep in the stroller so I walked the 2 of them all the way up State Street to the Arlington Theatre to meet Rhodri and my parents for lunch at Carlitos. We visited my Dad's office after lunch and the ladies swarmed around Tryfan.
After lunch, my long lost friend Lisa and her two kids drove down from their olive ranch in San Luis Obispo to reunite for the afternoon. Here we all are with her two kids Mason and Maren.
That evening, I got to flee the nest and have a night out with my girlfriends. I am so lucky that all 3 of my best friends from elementary and junior high school still live in SB/Goleta.

Friends with a camper truck

On Saturday night, our good friends Mike and Deanna stopped by to spend the night outside in their camper truck with their two boys Aidan (4 yrs) and Tyler (2.5 yrs). All three kids played together really well, riding tricycles around and splashing with water toys. Tyler loves babies right now, so he kept wanting to hold Tryfan in his lap. Finally he got his wish but he had to sit on Rhiannon's lap first. They had a really cool "Lance" camper truck that was kitted out in such an efficient and fun way. Rhodri and I have always been more of a tent camping family, but maybe we should reconsider. Here are Tyler and Rhiannon eating yogurt in the camper truck first thing on Sunday morning.
4 grown-ups and 4 kids, reunited on the family couch.

First few happy reunions

We've had a wonderful few days at my family's home in Goleta. We have been laying low but at the same time we have done so much! Today I got to break away from the troops and go to meet up with some old friends from elementary and junior high school. Yay! Then this afternoon my Mom had arranged for her whole side of the family to come here for a reunion.
Here is everybody...front row (l to r): Eric, Kristin, Tryfan, Rhodri, Aunt Dawn, Uncle Ben, Ted; back row: Keltie, Ryan, Dad Carl, Rhiannon, Will, Lisl, Sonia, Grandpa Don, Mom Debi, Matt, Aunt Kim, Grandma Linda, Uncle Steve, Danny, Aunt Jana and Uncle Michael. My sister Heidi couldn't make it and neither could my cousin Holly and her family or any of Aunt Dawnie's kids. We missed them. Thanks everyone for making the effort to come out and see us!Tryfan has been a little cling-meister. If someone else tries to hold him this is what he looks like, and you can imagine the sound that goes with it!

Yesterday (Friday) we met up with our San Diego friends Rosie and Ben (and their two kids Toby and Coral) who are en route moving to Napa this week. We met them at the Oak Park wading pool for some midday splashing and reconnecting. It was a perfect time together, although we were sad to say goodbye at the end of it.
Then Friday afternoon we walked around downtown Santa Barbara trying to get Rhiannon to take a nap in the stroller (didn't work) and then went straight to Goleta Beach for a family BBQ. Aunt Libby and her two little girls Ruby and Molly met us there too. Good ol' Goleta Beach. It hasn't changed much over the past 25 years or so.

Traveling

Well, we had a long but fairly good trip to Santa Barbara from Oslo. Rhiannon slept for most of the 11+ hr flight from London to LAX, thanks to the "knockout juice" we gave her. Tryfan, however, is part of the 1% of the population to have an opposite reaction to the juice so he was wired for most of the 11+ hr flight! Bad Mama for not testing it out on him before the flight! These first two photos were taken on the Oslo- London flight. We blew our travel allowance for the year on Business Class tickets for the 4 of us (3 seats) and it was sooooo nice. It was still a long trip but having 3 flat beds to sprawl out on made it tolerable and even quite enjoyable for the most part. Here is Tryfan in his "wired" stage.
Angels sleeping during the final 2 hours of the flight. My Mom and brother Eric picked us up at LAX and then we drove through nasty LA commuter traffic for about 4 hours with Tryfan crying his tired eyes out, finally arriving home in Goleta around 7pm. Rhiannon has adjusted to the -9 hour time zone with no problem at all, but little Tryfan is still struggling. But a happy rested Rhiannon and a grouchy tired Tryfan is a much better combination than the opposite situation!

Tryfan's new friend

This isn't the first time that Tryfan has looked at his reflection in the mirror, but it's the first time that he has been curious about that handsome fellow in the glass.

At first today (when I was holding him), he acted really bashful and shy the same way he does when he meets strangers in real life: He smiles, then burrows his head into my shoulder, then peeks back with a little flirty smile. It was so funny to watch him do this with the fellow in the mirror!

Rain don't stop us

After yesterday's 11am high of 90 deg F, the afternoon weather came in big time. The temperature dropped 30 degress over a few hours and we had thunder and lightning along with lots of rain. The rain continued all night and all day today. But that didn't stop us! Rhiannon and I went to the self-pick strawberry farm at 9am this morning and joined the rest of the Norwegian nutters who were out at this hour on a rainy Sunday morning to do manual labor! We picked ~12 lbs of berries, although the "we" was actually just me. Rhiannon stood and watched the tractors move around and ate the berries that I had just picked, then proceeded to go socialize with our picking neighbors in adjoining rows until she declared she was cold and we left.

This afternoon I got to go horseback riding with my friend Hanne! Not ideal conditions for it, but I wore my stylish orange-and-yellow rain ensemble and had a great time anyway. I used to have a horse (that I shared with my sister Heidi), so I am familiar with horses and so forth. However, I had forgotten how big and strong they are! Walking alongside a horse is not like walking alongside a Bentley-type dog. When my horse Pelle wanted go to the left and eat bushes, I had a heck of a time getting him not to do so. But anyway, the rain stopped and skies lightened for us to go on a lovely ride through the hilly forest near Bogstad Gaard. It was so exhilarating to gallop through the woods and even through a shallow river! Now, however, after I have had a hot bath with sea salts and other muscle soaking potions, I reckon I will feel this day throughout the rest of the week. It was worth it though to have a day free of the house and the family.

Oh no!

While we were here reveling in the lovely weather and admiring my stylish bedhead, my family in California was packing up and evacuating because of an encroaching wildfire! Needless to say, we are very worried about the situation since we are due to be home in Santa Barbara (well, technically in Goleta) in just a few short days.

UPDATE: I spoke with my parents and, at the moment, everything is fine. They haven't actually left the house (although they were asked to do so) because the fire doesn't appear to be imminently threatening (yet). They assured us that they will not be heroes with hoses on the roof, and if things get dire they are already packed and ready to go. So we are less worried now :-)

UPDATE AGAIN: The best place to find updates on the Gap Fire in Santa Barbara and Goleta is HERE.

Independence Day

I just realized that we get to enjoy Independence Day before anyone else back home. Not that we are doing anything exciting or even of note, but it has started out to be a good day nonetheless. Rhodri is away in Poland this week so we have been struggling a little bit without him, but this morning both kids slept until 6:15am (after going to sleep around 7pm) and they both woke up happy. I glanced in the mirror on our way downstairs for breakfast and was pleasantly surprised to see that my bedhead was tolerable enough to go out in public without doing anything! No hat, no water on the hair to make it calm down, nothing. Just stylishly messy. These are definitely signs of the start of a good day! Of course, it helps that it is Friday and Rhodri will be back late tonight. The superb weather we are having at the moment helps as well - it has been in the high 70's to mid 80's (deg F). We keep going back to Finsrud beach in the afternoons because it is just so convenient and shady, quiet and safe. Anyway, Happy Independence Day to all you Americans out there!

Finsrud afternoon

Today was warm and lovely so I picked up Rhiannon early from barnehage and went to Finsrud beach again. Here is Rhiannon with some of her homies eating their afternoon snack (l to r): Kaja-Elise, Rhiannon, Philip, Mari, Rubi-Marie, Kaia and Vana. When Rhiannon saw Sofie go for a pee in the bushes today at the beach, she thought she would give it a go as well. I didn't hear the conversation (which was in Norwegian) but apparently Rhiannon was asking Sofie here if she could see any "tisse" (pee) come out. Us Mamas were laughing together about this scene, as you can imagine.
Another barnehage friend, Tora, showed up with an elephant water toy. She was kind enough to share with her friends
We are starting to get very VERY excited because in just one week from today, we will be flying to California! Yippiee!

Field trip to Asker Museum

A couple of weeks ago, Rhiannon's entire barnehage took a field trip to Asker Museum. I don't think they actually went inside the museum, but it looks like they had a really great time playing outside on the extensive grounds all day.
Sofia's (of jumping fame in a previous post) father went along as a helper on the trip and he took this photo of Rhiannon. Vana is behind her to the left and Rubi-Marie is in the distant back to the right.
